Marseille are keen to add a defender to their squad as soon as the January transfer window opens. Following a serious injury to Spanish right back Caesar Azpilicueta, which will keep the player sidelined for at least six months, the Ligue 1 giants have a pressing need for another right sided defender.

The names under consideration at the Stade Velodrome for a winter transfer swoop are Rennes’ Rod Fanni and Sunderland’s Marcos Angeleri. While Fanni would be Marseille’s preferred option, it is likely that Rennes would stand firm in January to keep hold of their impressive full back. The Ligue 1 side would also demand at least €5M, a price Marseille are reluctant to pay.

Angeleri however, has failed to make a single start for Sunderland since arriving at the club from Estudiantes this year, but has three senior caps for Argentina and Marseille believe they may be able to snap up a bargain. Their immediate need also makes the prospect of waiting until the summer for Fanni unlikely.
