Marseille are still hopeful of pipping Liverpool to the signature of Rennes defender Rod Fanni, and have stepped up their negotiations with their Ligue 1 rivals. While Liverpool have no trouble meeting Rennes’ asking price for Fanni – around €3.5M – Marseille are struggling to offer that amount and their last bid, of €3M, was rejected.

The current Ligue 1 champions are desperate to add Fanni to their squad and need cover on the right side of their defence due to the season-ending injury suffered by Cesar Azpilicueta.

While Rennes are not keen to sell to a Ligue 1 rival with Liverpool are on the scene, the thoughts of Fanni are not known, and should the player wish to remain in France, Marseille will be in the driving seat, providing of course they can meet the Breton club’s transfer demands.
