New Wales national team manager Gary Speed has spoken of his pride at leading his country. The 41-year-old, who had to quit his job with Sheffield United, where he had been in the hot seat for just four months, succeeds John Toshack, who stepped down in September.

"It’s something that’s very difficult to turn down when your country comes calling"
, said Speed, adding that: "I am a very proud man to be asked to be manager of Wales."

Given Wales’ poor start to the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, the main target for Speed now will be to ensure qualification for the country to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Before that however, Speed will try to build consistency and form in the country’s remaining qualifiers, one of which will be against England on 26th March.
