Inter Milan have confirmed the sacking of Spanish coach Rafael Benitez after barely six months in charge. Despite winning the Italian Super Cup and the Club World Cup, a poor Serie A campaign put Benitez in a tricky position.

The former Liverpool manager had issued a ‘back me or sack’ me message to Nerazzurri President Massimo Moratti, demanding five or six new players in the January transfer window following victory against TP Mazembe in the Club World Cup final earlier this month. Moratti though has chosen to sack the Spaniard and will now commence the search for Benitez’ successor.

Benitez is currently spending Christmas on Merseyside with his family and has even been linked with a shock return to Liverpool. Yet having managed that club between 2004 and 2010, and failed to win the Premier League, combined with last season’s seventh place finish, it is difficult to imagine the Anfield side once again employing the Spaniard.
