Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has backed Fernando Torres to show the form of old and is convinced that the Spanish striker will soon be tearing apart Premier League defences once again.

Hodgson says that Torres is getting better every day and the former Fulham manager has praised his commitment in training.

"I just think Fernando is getting stronger, fitter and more confident", explained Hodgson to Liverpool’s official site. "All he needs is a goal or two and then he’ll explode.

"I watch him in training every day and he works very hard, he’s fully committed to everything, but he’s a front player and they play on unbelievably tight margins. All he needs is a couple of goals or a couple of good performances and you will see the Fernando Torres of old."

Liverpool were frustrated to see their Boxing Day match with Blackpool called off yesterday due to a frozen pitch, the Bloomfield Road ground being the only Premier League venue without undersoil heating. However, the cancellation ensures that Hodgson’s men will be fresh for Wednesday’s home meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
