Reports in Spain suggest Real Madrid could abandon their hunt for a striker in this month’s transfer window and instead wait until the summer to sign Fernando Llorente. Los Blancos have been studying the market carefully after it was confirmed Gonzalo Higuain would have to undergo surgery on a troublesome hernia – and that should keep him out until May.

Jose Mourinho’s side have been linked with moves for Miroslav Klose, Emmanuel Adebayor and Amauri in recent weeks, but Los Blancos could shun all of these in favour of Athletic Bilbao striker Llorente.

Llorente emerged as a Real Madrid target last summer, but the Madrid side were unwilling to meet the striker’s buyout clause which, given Athletic’s unwillingness to sell, was the only way to secure the player.

Now it has been suggested that Mourinho has told President Florentino Perez that waiting until the end of the season to sign Llorente could be the best option. Los Blancos officials have already put in some legwork on a potential deal – although this would still involve meeting Llorente’s €36M buyout clause.
