Aston Villa are closing in on the signature of Lyon’s tough-tackling midfielder Jean Makoun after it emerged they had agreed terms with the Ligue 1 club.
The English Premier League side had struggled to meet Lyon’a asking price for the Cameroonian, but have persuaded the French side to accept a basic fee of €6M with a further €3M to come based on Makoun’s performances at Villa Park.
Villa are now discussing personal terms with Makoun and, providing there are no hitches, could even complete the deal before their weekend clash with Birmingham City, though it is understood the Cameroon star would be unlikely to play in that match.
Manager Gerard Houllier will be delighted to have got his man, feeling that Makoun can add some much needed energy and bite to an often docile Villa midfield.
