Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has made a surprise return to football management by inking a deal with Russian side Terek Grozny.

The former Chelsea and Newcastle manager, who last coached with MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy in 2008, has agreed to head to the Chechen Republic to take on the task of restoring Terek’s fortunes.

The Chechen club finished 12th in the Russian Premier League last season, despite hoping to break into the upper half of the table. Gullit, who has signed an 18-month deal, will be tasked with ensuring the 2011 campaign is a better one.
