AEK Athens have pulled off something of a coup by snapping up Spanish midfielder Michel on loan from Premier League side Birmingham City until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old made the move to England from La Liga side Sporting Gijon in the summer, but has struggled to win a place in the starting eleven, with Scottish schemer Barry Ferguson keeping him out of the side.

"I’m sorry the Michel one has not worked out", explained Birmingham manager Alex McLeish, "but Barry Ferguson’s form has been stunning and made it difficult for him."

Greek Super League side AEK will be delighted with the capture though and Michel himself is pleased to be heading to Athens.

"I’m happy to have joined AEK, a team which plays in Europe. It is a well-known club with history in Greece and Europe."
