Chelsea have failed in a late bid to sign Fernando Torres from Premier League rivals Liverpool. The Stamford Bridge outfit, who were also interested in signing the Spaniard last summer, remain keen to add him to their ranks, but have been told Torres is not for sale.

“Chelsea have made a bid for Fernando, which has been turned down. The player is not for sale”, a Liverpool spokesman told BBC Sport.

Chelsea’s bid is believed to have been in the region of £40M and further reinforces their determination to remain as serious players in European football. The Blues will no doubt be expected to return in the summer if, as seems likely, Liverpool miss out on Champions League football for the second successive season.
