Russian side Rubin Kazan have confirmed that they have loaned out Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins to English Premier League side Birmingham City for six months. The move means Martins will miss the first half of the Russian season.

The 26-year-old was keen to return to England, where he had a spell with Newcastle United before joining German side Wolfsburg in 2010; his wife has had a child as Rubin coach Kurban Berdiyev explained: "His child was born and he asked to let him go to England, because Obafemi wants to be closer to his family."

The former Newcastle hitman could have chosen West Brom, who were also seriously interested in his services. But it is Birmingham that have won the day and boss Alex McLeish will hope Martins can add some much needed firepower to the Blues frontline.
