Liverpool have announced the arrival of Andy Carroll from Newcastle United as a replacement for Fernando Torres who signed for Chelsea. The 22-year-old has become the Merseyside club’s record signing, with a fee in the region of £35M being paid for his services.

Carroll has signed a five and a half year deal at Anfield and, in a sign of how important boss Kenny Dalglish feels the striker will be, has been handed the number 9 shirt.

The former Newcastle man is joined by Luis Suarez, who spent transfer deadline day sorting out the final details of his €26.5M switch from Ajax. Suarez has been given Dalglish’s old number 7 shirt.

In signing the duo, Dalglish will hope to create something of the John Toshack and Kevin Keegan partnership which was legendary at Anfield.
