Wayne Rooney scored his first goals from open play since March last year to help Manchester United beat Aston Villa 3-1 last night and instantly set his sights on notching many more.

Rooney found the back of the net after just one minute at Old Trafford, and then added a second in injury time at the end of the first half. His heroics made Villa’s task close to impossible, though a Darren Bent strike gave them so hope, before Nemanja Vidic drove a shot from just inside the penalty area to ripple the back of Brad Friedel’s net and secure a 3-1 win.

"I’ve been happy with my play", said Rooney to MUTV after the match. "Obviously I want to score. As a striker you want to score. I’ve been happy with my play, apart from the Blackpool game – I just couldn’t get in the game – but I’m delighted today to score and hopefully I can go on a great run and help the team win games."

Rooney’s goal-getting helped United to establish a five-point cushion over second placed Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. Overhauling it already looks a daunting task for their rivals.
