Manchester United are believed to be stepping up their interest in 17-year-old Argentine Juan Manuel Iturbe. The winger joined Quilmes in the summer and has drawn comparisons with countryman Lionel Messi, sparking the attention of a host of European sides.

Iturbe has also starred for Argentina’s Under-20s, making six starts and scoring six goals so far.

The 17-year-old is reported ready to sign for FC Porto when he turns 18, but United’s close relationship with the Portuguese clubs means Sir Alex Ferguson is confident of being able to bag Irtube when the time is right.

United can be expected to allow the Argentine time to adapt to life in Portugal and acclimatise to the pace of the European game. Then the Premier League giants will mount a swoop, having to pay out at least €10M to bag the player.
