Wolfsburg’s caretaker boss Pierre Littbarski has suspended the club’s midfielder Diego for one game after he defied former coach Steve McClaren to take, and then miss, a penalty against Hannover last weekend.

The match was lost 1-0, leaving McClaren fuming that Diego had gone against instructions for Patrick Helmes to take spot-kicks, to grab the ball himself. McClaren then proceeded to watch Diego miss the penalty.

The former Middlesbrough boss was promptly sacked by Wolfsburg on Monday, leaving Littbarski in temporary charge.

"I’ve suspended him for one game", said Littbarski of Diego, "because of what happened last weekend."

Diego arrived at Wolfsburg in the summer for €15M from Juventus.
