Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas was left in buoyant mood last night after his side beat arch rivals Saint-Etienne 4-1 away from home. The result not just kept Lyon very much in the title race, but it also avenged Les Gones’ loss to their rivals earlier in the season.

Aulas was full of praise for coach Claude Puel and the players for keeping the seven times Ligue 1 champions in with a shout of winning the league.

"I think especially to thank Claude Puel, the staff and all the players, who produced so much high quality in a challenging environment", said Aulas.

"Saint-Etienne was heavily favoured because they were ahead in the standings. They led the scoring, but we reacted well."

And Aulas reflected on what had been a terrible start to the season, stating even then that he maintained Lyon should still aim for the title.

"I have always said, even when we were 18th a few months ago after losing unfairly to Saint-Etienne, that we would work to find solutions. We aimed to gradually return and find an acceptable position. It is true that the defeat at Valenciennes [Lyon’s last defeat ed.] presented a number of challenges. But I always said that the goal was to win the title."
