Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney believes the goal he scored to win yesterday’s Manchester derby against Manchester City could well be his finest ever.

With the game level at 1-1, Nani, who had scored United’s first, sent a high cross towards Rooney in the penalty area. The delivery was behind the England star, but with a quick adjustment in his body shape, Rooney sent an unstoppable overhead kick past City keeper Joe Hart, who was left with no chance.

The Old Trafford faithful were startled at a goal of such brilliance and City were instantly shocked into submission. In one overhead strike, Rooney confirmed his world-class credentials.

"Yeah, I think that’s my best one", said Rooney after the match. "I just tried to get into a good position for when Nani crossed the ball. I saw it come into the box and I thought ‘why not?’ So I tried it and thankfully it went into the top corner."

Rooney was modest enough to admit that there was an element of luck to the strike however, but he was delighted that it found the back of the net and, was subsequently, the match winning goal.

"Nine times out of ten they go over the crossbar or wide", admitted the striker, "but thankfully today it went into the top corner. It’s instinctive. You don’t have time to think about what you’re going to do."
