Jose Mourinho skipped Real Madrid training on Saturday, before the club’s hard earned Sunday victory over Espanyol (1-0), to head to watch Champions League Round of 16 opponents Lyon.

The Portuguese may have cut Barcelona’s lead at the top of La Liga to five points, but Mourinho surely appreciates that finishing ahead of the Catalans still looks a difficult proposition. And winning the Champions League, which would be Los Blancos’ tenth, would write his name into the history books regardless of this season’s La Liga.

Mourinho looked on from the stands in Saint-Etienne as Lyon, who have rediscovered their form, romped to a 4-1 win over their local rivals. The Portuguese will surely have made plenty of notes in advance of meeting the French side. The former Inter boss will also be aware that Lyon have put Real Madrid out at this stage before.
