Tottenham Hotspur scored an impressive 1-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie against AC Milan that left boss Harry Redknapp dubbing his players as "absolutely brilliant."

In the San Siro Spurs were expected to run into a dominant Milan side that currently sit on top of the Serie A standings, however, the English controlled play for large parts of the contest and, when Peter Crouch struck in the 80th minute, had a vital 1-0 win to show for it.

"It was a fantastic performance and the lads were absolutely brilliant", beamed Redknapp. "I thought we were by far and away the better team in the first half. We knew the storm would come in the second half, we knew that the pressure would come and it’s hard not to drop deep when you are put under pressure.

"But the lads were magnificent at the back and we caught them on the break, scored the goal, and it was a well deserved win."

A famous victory in Milan was marred only by scenes after the final whistle when Gennaro Gattuso, who saw a booking rule him out of the return leg at White Hart Lane, squared up to Spurs coach Joe Jordan, headbutting him as he was pushed away. The midfielder later admitted "I lost control", as he apologised to the Scot.
