Talented Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri is at the centre of a two-way tug of war for his signature.

Currently plying his trade for Basel, Shaqiri is wanted by La Liga side Villarreal and Premier League outfit Aston Villa. To complicate matters further, Basel are also desperate to keep hold of the 19-year-old.

The youngster really burst onto the scene last season at St. Jakob Park, helping Basel to capture the Swiss league and cup double. At international level, 2010 was the Shaqiri’s breakout year, with a call-up to the 2010 World Cup squad followed by regular time on the pitch in the country’s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

Indeed, the 19-year-old sent a scorching left footed shot into the top left hand corner of the goal when Switzerland met England in September last year, instantly announcing himself to the wider footballing public.

Basel desperately want to keep hold of Shaqiri, but realise that with serious interest from Aston Villa and Villarreal the impressive youngster’s head may well be turned.
