Atletico Madrid are looking seriously at the possibility of signing Shaun Wright-Phillips from Manchester City in the summer. The capital city club have identified the speedy winger as a player who could offer them an extra dimension in La Liga and are well aware of his lack of playing time at Eastlands.

According to Cadena Ser, Atletico believe Wright-Phillips will leave City in June and wish to place themselves at the front of the queue for his signature. With The Mattress Makers well below their stated objective of a top four finish in La Liga, improvements must be made next season, as Atletico’s long term aim is regular Champions League football.

Wright-Phillips could fancy the adventure of Spanish football and Atletico would surely place an attractive package in front of him. The prospect of lining up alongside Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan may also turn the Englishman’s head.

The 29-year-old joined City in 2008, returning to the club at which he began his career after a three-year spell with Chelsea. Yet to truly show the potential he was lauded as having, the winger may feel a change of scenery will finally help him reach those heights and also provide him with the first team football he craves.
