Following the return of winning ways for Barcelona yesterday, via a 2-1 home victory over Athletic Bilbao, coach Josep Guardiola has warned the club’s media critics that they should not doubt the players at his disposal.

Having only drawn with Sporting Gijon in La Liga and then lost away to Arsenal in the Champions League, there were those who speculated that the season could take a turn for the worse for the Blaugrana, with February being a month to forget. But goals from David Villa and Lionel Messi ensured Barcelona retain a five-point lead over Real Madrid, and left Guardiola singing his players’ praises.

"These players are worth an empire", said the Catalan coach.

"I don’t know if we’ll win a lot or nothing, but even so it will not change my opinion about them."

And Guardiola is happy with the lead over Jose Mourinho’s side.

"It is a success to be five points ahead. Madrid are a great team and [even] the best team in Europe will not easily beat him. And with a coach who has nine years without losing at home, that’s not [easy] to overcome."
