La Liga side Sevilla are reported to have taken a keen interest in Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker. The German defender has been repeatedly linked with a switch to Arsenal, but the Spanish club’s interest looks firmer than that of Arsene Wenger.

Werder Bremen are having a poor season in the Bundesliga, engaged in a relegation battle, with their defence having leaked a mammoth 50 goals in just 24 games. Mertesacker was quoted before Christmas as saying that helping Werder must be his priority, with transfer talk very much put on the back burner.

However, with the end of the season approaching, the 26-year-old is set to be the subject of much interest, and Werder may feel the time has come to cash in on the player they bought from Hannover in 2006.

Standing at 6"6 tall, and solid defensively, Mertesacker would be a welcome addition to most sides and will not be parted with cheaply.
