La Liga side Espanyol are bidding to take Carlos Cuellar back to Spain according to Catalan daily Sport, but expect competition from several other sides for the defender’s signature.

The 29-year-old currently turns out for English Premier League outfit Aston Villa, having joined the Midlands giants in 2008 from Scottish side Rangers.

Espanyol have been searching high and low for a centre back to bring to the club during the summer window who is both affordable and also has experience of Spanish football – Cuellar fits the bill on both counts.

However, the Barcelona-based club are well aware that the Aston Villa man is an attractive proposition for other La Liga sides and have so far been conducting discreet negotiations with Villa in the hope of stealing a march on their rivals. Cuellar is believed to be available at the right price.

Espanyol feel Cuellar would be open to a return to Spain as the player has still not fulfilled his dream of representing his country. Should he hit the heights in La Liga, Cuellar would have a better chance of catching Vicente del Bosque’s eye.

Aston Villa have endured a horrific Premier League campaign and boss Gerard Houllier looks set to make big changes come the summer; the sale of Cuellar then would be little surprise.
