Arjen Robben has pinpointed what he believes is a major problem for Bayern Munich and has contributed towards the German side’s wretched second half of the season – the lack of a true leader on the pitch.
And the Dutchman knows that the Allianz Arena club did have a true leader before Christmas in the shape of countryman Mark van Bommel. Van Bommel was Bayern’s captain until his move to AC Milan in the January transfer window, and for Robben his omission has been a glaring one.
"We have captains [Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger ed.], but Mark van Bommel was a true leader and that is someone that we lack right now.
"When it all goes well, we do not really need this kind of player, but it should be noted that we’ve dropped too many points."
Robben is known to have a good relationship with Van Bommel, and the former Barcelona midfielder has urged the Bayern winger to join him at the San Siro next season.
