Borussia Dortmund clinched the Bundesliga title yesterday as they grabbed a 2-0 win over Nurnberg and their closest challengers, Bayer Leverkusen, went down by the same scoreline at 1.FC Koln.
For Dortmund it is a title triumph that has been long overdue, with the regular gates of 70,000 plus fans not witnessing a Bundesliga-winning campaign since the 2001/02 season. Now however, Jurgen Klopp’s side can celebrate.
"This championship win is the biggest achievement of a team in the history of Borussia Dortmund", beamed sporting director Michael Zorc.
"Nobody had this young team down as title contenders before the start of the season. And no one could have expected the team to stroll through the season the way they did."
And stroll to the Bundesliga title Dortmund most certainly did. The Ruhr giants may have had to watch rivals Schalke advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League, but they destroyed their competition domestically.
With two games left to play Dortmund have lost just four times this season, scoring 64 goals and conceding only 19. They sit an impressive 13 points ahead of last season’s champions Bayern Munich.
