Jorge Valdano is on the verge of quitting as Real Madrid’s director general in a move which will considerably strengthen Jose Mourinho’s hand. Valdano is reported to have handed his resignation in to president Florentino Perez two weeks ago, but the Real Madrid chief urged his colleague to stay until at least the end of the season.
The Argentine has not seen eye-to-eye with Mourinho, with a fierce battle between the two over Real Madrid’s moves in the January transfer window. While the Portuguese coach wanted to bring in another striker – and ultimately got his way with Emmanuel Adebayor – Valdano and Perez were urging Mourinho to go with what the club already had and place his faith in Karim Benzema.
Valdano’s exit should give Mourinho a boost in his summer transfer dealings, with the Portuguese having shown his iron will and determination to get his way.
Who will yet replace Valdano is unclear, but with Real Madrid’s transfer planning already well advanced, and Nuri Sahin already signed up, the director general’s departure is unlikely to affect current policy.
