Bundesliga side Schalke are hoping to replace Manuel Neuer with Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, but may have to see off interest from Manchester United to do so.
The Champions League semi-finalists are losing their number 1 Neuer to Bayern Munich this summer, with a possible fee of around €20M being realised for the Germany star.
However, Ralf Rangnick’s men are determined not to let the episode ruin their summer and are plotting a swoop for Stekelenburg. Such a move, were it to come off, would represent a huge coup for the Ruhr giants and serve as a serious reminder of their continued ambition..
Stekelenburg is attracting the attention of Premier League champions Manchester United though, with the Red Devils looking to replace the retiring Edwin van der Sar.
And should Schalke become embroiled in a transfer battle with United for the Holland keeper, it is unlikely they would triumph. The Bundesliga side will not be put off though and should still send a substantial bid to Amsterdam.
