AC Milan are thought to be considering a bid for Wolfsburg playmaker Diego. The Brazilian has attracted attention from English giants Liverpool as their manager Kenny Dalglish spies a bargain, but the Rossoneri could get involved in a transfer tussle.
Diego should leave Wolfsburg this summer after a disappointing season on the pitch and a controversial one off it. The ex-Juventus schemer riled former coach Steve McClaren by insisting on taking a penalty earlier in the campaign – which he missed – when the Englishman had designated another spot-kick taker.
More recently Diego snubbed a place on the Wolfsburg bench against Hoffenheim, angering current manager Felix Magath. Indeed, his days at the Volkswagen Arena look numbered under the former Schalke chief.
Initially wanting €15M for the Brazilian’s signature, Wolfsburg have now dropped this demand to €10M, sparking Liverpool’s interest. The Reds believe a swoop for Diego could see them snare a bargain in the same way as Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who signed Rafael van der Vaart from Real Madrid for a cut-price £8M last summer.
Milan though are paying attention to Diego’s situation too. The power brokers at Milanello are running the rule over meeting Wolfsburg’s €10M asking price. While a move for Napoli midfield schemer Marek Hamsik is preferred, the Rossoneri are well aware that such a move could be mission impossible.
Therefore, Diego’s name has cropped up in discussions as an alternative, despite the fact that the playmaker endured a miserable spell at Juventus in the 2009/10 season.
