Lazio are still hopeful of being in the running to sign out-of-favour Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor, but feel their prospects of doing so are looking slim.

The Rome giants have long watched the Togo striker, but it was Real Madrid who swooped to snap up Adebayor on loan until the end of the season in January and there remains some confusion about his long term future.

Los Blancos had decided to dispatch the 27-year-old back to Eastlands and were unwilling to pay the amount demanded by City to make the move a permanent one. However, Jose Mourinho is thought to be considering his options and may yet have a change of heart.

Lazio would therefore only mount a swoop if Real Madrid chose to send Adebayor back to England, but while the Rome side would be confident of being an attractive destination for the former Arsenal striker, financial considerations have come into play.

Adebayor, who earns more than €5M per year, would push Lazio’s wage budget to breaking point and, given a lack of Champions League football next season, this figure may be unaffordable.
