Manchester United have completed the signing of 19-year-old defender Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers.

The Red Devils had met the amount specified in Jones’ contract with the Ewood Park side allowing him to leave, but the deal was delayed as Blackburn’s Indian owners Venky’s sought to find out whether this was binding.

Now, for a deal worth up to £17M, Jones has landed at Old Trafford and instantly expressed his delight

"It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m looking forward to a new challenge", said the England Under-21 international.

Jones is expected to form United’s central defensive partnership of the future with Chris Smalling, although the club’s current first choice pairing of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand show no sign of slowing down just yet.

The former Blackburn man had been chased by Arsenal and Liverpool, but chose United believing the club represent his best chance of consistently winning silverware.

Jones has inked a five-year deal at Old Trafford.
