Manchester United are edging closer towards confirming the signing of England winger Ashley Young.

The player underwent a medical yesterday and appears to be in the process of ironing out the final details of his move from Villa Park to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

Young had just one year remaining on his contract with Villa, forcing the Midlands giants into listening to offers for their starlet, with the player himself making it clear he wishes to play in the Champions League.

Several other sides had been in the running for Young, including United’s bitter rivals Liverpool. But with no European football on offer at Anfield and the club about to embark on a rebuilding programme under Kenny Dalglish, Young has preferred to head for the established side of the English champions.

United are believed to be paying around £17M for the Aston Villa man, who will join England Under-21 defender Phil Jones, who himself made the switch from Blackburn Rovers earlier this summer for a similar fee, at Old Trafford.
