Aston Villa have failed in a late bid to sign Joe Cole on loan from Liverpool.
The Merseyside club have confirmed that the out-of favour midfielder has signed for Lille on loan and will remain with the French champions for the rest of the season.
The 29-year-old has been struggling for playing time at Anfield and Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish determined at the start of the summer not to stand in the midfielder’s way, if a suitable offer arrived.
With Champions League action on the agenda at Rudi Garcia’s side, Aston Villa were always up against it in their late bid to persuade Cole to the late Midlands.
Villa do though look poised to sign defender Alan Hutton from Tottenham Hotspur for £3M. Hutton joined Spur from Rangers in 2008 for an estimate £9M.
