West Ham have completed the signing of Mali striker Modibo Maiga from FC Sochaux for an undisclosed fee.

Maiga joins the newly promoted Hammers on a four-year deal with an option to extend the contract for a further two-year term.

The 24-year-old plays primarily as a striker but can also operate as a winger. He boasted a strong record in the French championship with Sochaux, netting 24 times in just 59 appearances in his two years with the club in Ligue 1.

Maiga has expressed his delight at completing a move to the Hammers and said that he was looking forward to representing the club in the upcoming season.

"I am really happy and excited about joining West Ham United”, said the forward to the club’s official website. “I know West Ham are a big club in England and I’m really looking forward to representing them."

The Malian cited the club’s rich history as one of the major factors which made him sign for the Irons.

“They have huge tradition and it is like joining part of a family and that is one of the main reasons I wanted to come here”, said the former Sochaux man. "I know some of the big names that have played for the club in the past and I am proud to be part of a new team back in the Premier League."

The 24-year-old is the club’s fifth dip in the transfer market this summer as West Ham look to rebuild their squad for the upcoming Premier League season.

Maiga is now the West Ham’s biggest capture to date this summer having completed the signings of Mohamed Diame, Jussi Jaaskelainen, George McCartney and Stephen Henderson.

The Mali international was one of Newcastle’s primary targets in the January transfer window and the West Ham faithful are sure to be happy that he failed his medical at St. James’ Park in December to open up a switch to the Irons.
