Real Madrid have cooled their interest in Luka Modric, according to Madrid-based daily Marca, in the latest move in the game of poker now being played over the Croatian.

Los Blancos have not been able to thrash out an agreement with Modric’s club Tottenham Hotspur who are sticking firmly to their asking price and not budging.

Now Real Madrid are prepared to play the waiting game with Spurs and leave the White Hart Lane outfit with an unhappy player for the summer.

Indeed, it is even suggested that Jose Mourinho’s men will wait until the end of the transfer window to take the Croatian to the Bernabeu, leaving Spurs with the very real possibility of having little time to replace the disgruntled playmaker.

The Spanish side are now engaged in a high stakes poker game with Spurs and this could in turn delay the departures of Kaka and Nuri Sahin; the pair will be surplus to requirements if Modric joins.

Modric is keen to sign for Real Madrid and has already agreed the outline of a contract with the current La Liga champions.

The player has also communicated this desire to Tottenham and even missed the club’s US pre-season tour in a bid to force through a switch to Spain.
