Barcelona could complete a remarkable swoop for Liverpool defender Daniel Agger, according to El Mundo Deportivo, who have cited sources close to the Denmark international.

Blaugrana coach Tito Vilanova is desperate to add a defensive option to his squad this summer, but has been priced out of a move for Athletic Bilbao’s Javi Martinez. And the ball-playing ability of centre back Agger is highly rated at the Camp Nou.

Agger played no part in Liverpool’s friendly in the United States against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday and it has been speculated that this could point in the direction of a switch to Barcelona.

Indeed, now all eyes are on Agger to see if he plays any part in Liverpool’s Europa League qualifier against Gomel on Thursday, which would seem certain to all but scupper any chance of a move to the Catalan giants.

Further adding to the raft of transfer chatter is recent news that Liverpool are interested in Athletic Bilbao centre back Fernando Amorebieta, who has not yet inked a contract extension with the Basque club.

Agger himself is also in line for a new contract at Anfield, if he is not sold, with the 27-year-old’s current deal expiring in 2014.

The technically gifted defender landed at the Reds in 2006 and soon took part in a Champions League final with the club in 2007.

He has promised to speak to Liverpool should they wish to extend his deal.
