Bayern Munich are believed to have thrashed out a deal with Athletic Bilbao for defensive midfielder Javi Martinez, despite the Bavarians making no comment on the suggestion.

According to German sports news agency SID and German daily Bild, Bayern Munich have agreed a fee of €30M with Athletic Bilbao for the Spaniard.

Martinez is also thought to have agreed to sign a five-year contract at the Allianz Arena in a development which would signal the end of Bayern Munich’s summer-long chase for the 23-year-old.

It would also represent a real coup for Jupp Heynckes’ men, who will have snapped up a player also wanted by Barcelona.

While Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer would not confirm Martinez’ arrival, he did repeat the club’s interest in the Spain star.

"It is true that Javi Martinez is a very interesting player", said Sammer.

"But the sporting side and the financial side must be in tune.

"It would be interesting for us, provided we can find a solution that does not become a transfer record."

The Bavarians are desperate to take the Bundesliga title away from Borussia Dortmund this season and are splashing the cash in an attempt to do so.
