Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has admitted that the club will be lavishing an extraordinary amount of money to sign Spanish midfielder Javi Martinez from Athletic Bilbao.

The Bavarians have been desperate to sign Martinez all summer, but Athletic Bilbao have stuck to an asking price of €40M. Yesterday several German sources suggested the deal for the Spaniard was all but done, and even if that is slightly premature, Bayern Munich are pushing ahead with the swoop.

It is not clear whether Bayern Munich will pay €40M for the European Championship-winning midfielder, or a slightly more reasonable €30M – but whatever the fee is, it is a large amount of money for the German giants to splash.

And that is a fact Hoeness well appreciates, although he has stressed that the midfielder is a player he is desperate to sign.

"This is a crazy amount, but the player can play in different positions and we take into account this criteria", said Hoeness.

"In addition, we have worked for years to allow us to spend so much", he added.

The Bayern supremo also stressed though that there are still many loose ends to tie up before Martinez lands in Munich.

"I think we will see in a few days whether it is going to work or not.

"I am kept up to date on the things that are taking place there and I would be very happy if it worked out. Whether it has been worked out already, I don’t know."
