Robert Prosinecki has stood down from his post as Red Star Belgrade coach, citing the immense amount of pressure on his shoulders as the reason for his shock decision.

Red Star Belgrade are due to face French side Bordeaux in the Europa League playoff round later this week and the former midfielder’s announcement has rocked the Serbian giants.

Prosinecki admitted that now is not the best time to throw in the towel, but conceded the position is not for him.

"This is my decision. I cannot do this", announced the 43-year-old at a press conference.

"I cannot lead the team because of the pressures of all this", he added.

"I feel bad towards the players as they will meet Bordeaux and I know they need time to get a good result."

Prosinecki took charge of Red Star Belgrade in 2010. He led the former European Cup winners to the Serbian Cup last season, putting fierce rivals Partizan Belgrade to the sword in the semi-final.
