Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who has emerged as a target for Liverpool, has promised to come to a decision about his future soon.

The Dutchman currently turns out for Bundesliga giants Schalke, but has just one more year left on his contract and has not yet penned an extension.

Schalke are desperate for the striker, who managed a remarkable 48 goals in 48 games for the club last season, to stay, though they are prepared to cash in if he decides he wants to leave.

"When the time comes I will take a decision. I don’t think that it will be long", said Huntelaar after Schalke’s 2-2 draw against Hannover 96.

Huntelaar’s position is one Schalke are adopting an understanding stance over too.

"He is in a situation where he can sign his last big contract", said Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt.

"So he is thinking hard about that.

"That is his right and we are understanding."

Huntelaar joined Schalke from AC Milan in 2010 and has been a resounding success at the Ruhr giants, becoming a lethal marksman in the Bundesliga.
