Fulham have jumped ahead of Juventus in the race to sign Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov, with the Bulgarian having a medical at the Cottagers.

Several sources have confirmed that Berbatov appears to be heading to Craven Cottage after choosing to remain in England for family reasons.

Fiorentina had agreed a fee with Manchester United for the 31-year-old yesterday, but Berbatov failed to arrive in Florence as scheduled as Juventus mounted a late bid for the striker.

But Juventus struggled to agree payment terms for the fee with Manchester United, giving time for Fulham to thrash out a deal.

Now Berbatov is in London for a medical with Martin Jol’s men and is expected to put pen to paper before the transfer window slams shut tomorrow.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man has slipped firmly down the pecking order at Old Trafford and insisted earlier this summer that it was better if he parted company with Manchester United.

His chances of first team football this season have suffered still further with the respective captures of Robin van Persie and Angelo Henriquez by Sir Alex Ferguson.

It remains to be seen whether there will be further twists in the Berbatov transfer saga or whether Fulham will be the striker’s final destination.
