Real Madrid have taken a psychological advantage over Barcelona by winning the Spanish Super Cup.

Jose Mourinho’s men triumphed in the Bernabeu last night, despite starting the second leg trailing 3-2, having lost at the Camp Nou.

It did not take long for Real Madrid to assert their authority on the night, scoring through Gonzalo Higuain in just the 10th minute, before Cristiano Ronaldo added a second just nine minutes later.

Further action was not long in coming and Barcelona saw full-back Adriano sent off in the 28th minute for pulling down Ronaldo.

Barcelona were given hope however by talisman Lionel Messi, who slotted home a superbly taken free-kick just before the break.

But though that levelled the tie at 4-4, Real Madrid held the advantage by virtue of away goals, and it was one they retained through to the final whistle.

Ronaldo was quick to salute the victory, though the Portuguese star also stressed that Real Madrid must waste no time in moving on after the moment has been savoured.

"This title will give us confidence. We should be enjoying it, but we also know that we must move forward", said Ronaldo post-match.
