Real Madrid are negotiating to snap up Michael Essien from Chelsea as a replacement for Lassana Diarra, who could move to Anzhi Makhachkala, according to multiple sources in Spain.

Jose Mourinho’s men have accepted an offer from Anzhi Makhachkala for Diarra, whose contract at the Bernabeu is due to expire next summer.

Now the Spanish champions have approached Mourinho’s former club, Chelsea, to take Essien on loan to fill the hole left by Diarra’s departure and advanced talks are moving towards sending the 29-year-old to Real Madrid.

Essien has slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and also struggled with injuries.

He was omitted from Roberto Di Matteo’s squad for this evening’s Europa League clash against Atletico Madrid, believed to be to allow him to negotiate for a switch to Spain.

With the transfer deadline ticking down however, it remains to be seen whether the deal can be agreed before the window shuts.
