Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is keen on Udinese defender Danilo, according to sources in Italy.
The centre-back has been a key figure for Francesco Guidolin’s men since joining the Serie A side last summer, signing from Brazilian outfit Palmeiras for his first foray into European football.
Danilo clocked up 37 appearances in the Italian top flight in the 2011/12 campaign, helping Udinese to finish third. And the Zebrette had one of the tightest defences in Serie A, conceding just 35 goals in 38 games, a record only bettered by second placed AC Milan and champions Juventus.
Liverpool endured a disappointing transfer window, missing out on a replacement for striker Andy Carroll on deadline day, while money was generally tight at Anfield throughout the summer.
Rodgers is thought to now be determined to add to his squad when the January window opens at the start of 2013, with 28-year-old Danilo on his list of targets.
It remains to be seen whether Udinese will consider cashing in on Danilo if Liverpool make good on their interest, but a substantial offer may be difficult for the southern Italian side to refuse, given their reputation for selling first team regulars for the right price.
The Serie A outfit also suffered a blow last month, losing out on a spot in the Champions League group stages to Portuguese side Sporting Braga, in a development which is sure to have hit the club’s coffers.
