After helping Belgium to claim a 2-0 victory against Wales in Cardiff, captain Vincent Kompany insisted that the result is a vital step on the road to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, especially as he believes other teams in the group will drop points against the Welsh.

Belgium owed their victory to goals from Kompany himself and fellow defender Jan Vertonghen, who rifled home an unstoppable free kick from the edge of the penalty box.

Wales however had been up against it since the 26th minute, when defender James Collins saw red for a tackle on Guillaume Gillet.

For Belgium, coming through the test away to Wales was important, especially in a tough 2014 World Cup qualifying group which also contains Croatia, Serbia, Scotland and Macedonia.

"I am very happy. It was a perfect result, even though it was not our best game. Indeed, we have often played good matches in the past and not got a good result", said Kompany to Belgian broadcaster RTBF.

"I am convinced that many teams will drop points here", added the Manchester City captain.

And Kompany also stated Belgium’s burning desire to reach the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

"We want to go to Brazil. There are still many things to improve but we are on the right track."
