Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is of the opinion that English players sometimes get better treatment from referees in the Premier League.

Aguero saw countrymen Pablo Zabaleta and Carlos Tevez have penalty appeals turned down at the weekend, during Manchester City’s 2-1 win away at Fulham, while Liverpool’s Luis Suarez also had a strong penalty claim, his second successive such claim, turned down when the Reds beat Norwich 5-2 on the same day.

relatedNewsStory For Aguero, it is clear that referees in the Premier League hand a slight advantage to English players, despite the many foreign talents gracing the league.

"Yes, always. It happens everywhere. There is a little bit of privilege with players who come from that country", the Argentine was quoted as saying by the BBC, when asked about whether foreign stars have a harder time than English ones.

The former Atletico Madrid striker was then asked whether referees are a little suspicious of foreign players, something he was at pains not to agree with, although he did admit the situation persists elsewhere.

"Maybe, yes. It can happen, but I don’t think it does here", said Aguero.

"If it does, it is not good for anyone.

"Here in England, there are almost as many foreign players as English players and it is not right that some have a privilege that others don’t."

Aguero must next switch from focusing on the Premier League to the Champions League, with Borussia Dortmund the visitors to Eastlands on Wednesday.

Having lost their first group game against Real Madrid, the English champions need to grab all three points.
