French striker Olivier Giroud is relieved to have scored his first Premier League goal for Arsenal at the weekend, dubbing it “very important”.

Giroud scored the Gunners’ equaliser against West Ham in a game his side went on to win 3-1.

relatedNewsStoryAll eyes had been on the striker to open his league account, given the reputation and record he arrived at the Emirates Stadium with in the summer.


In the 2011/12 campaign, Giroud finished as top scorer in France’s Ligue 1, helping Montpellier to beat Paris Saint-Germain to the title; it also earned him a move to Arsenal.

Now that the forward has scored his first Premier League goal, he is confident more will come.

“I’m very happy to have scored and that we won”, he told Arsenal’s official site.


“It was a difficult game against a very good team, who play well at home.”

Now, the Frenchman admits, he has cast off a monkey from his back and can concentrate on producing more goalscoring heroics for the Gunners.

“I feel relived now.

“It was very important for me to score in the Premier League, to keep going and to start my adventure here with Arsenal.”

Following the win at West Ham, Arsenal are seventh in the Premier League, with 12 points from seven games.
