Russia coach Fabio Capello has saluted his players for gaining a battling victory over Portugal in their 2014 World Cup qualifier.

Capello had stressed before the match that he did not believe the clash in Moscow would be decisive, yet the Italian instantly cut a delighted figure after his team grabbed the three points.

relatedNewsStoryThe hosts took an early lead in the match after Aleksandr Kerzhakov put them ahead in the 6th minute.


It was a lead which, try as they might, Portugal could not peg back, and Russia secured the win.

"Today I saw exactly what I saw the team do in training last week", said Capello after the match.

"My players came on the pitch with a fighting spirit and gave 100% in order to win", added the former England manager.


"I’m really happy with my team’s performance.

"And I would like to thank the public for their support during this difficult game."

Russia now take a three point lead over Portugal in Group F, with three wins from their three games so far.

The other game in the group ended 6-0 to Israel, who beat Luxembourg.

Next up for Russia is a visit from Azerbaijan on Tuesday, while Portugal host Northern Ireland.
