Felix Magath has stood down as Wolfsburg manager.

The former Bayern Munich boss has presided over a poor start to the season at the Volkswagen Arena, with Wolfsburg sitting bottom of the Bundesliga table.

The final straw came last weekend, when the Wolves were beaten 2-0 at home by Freiburg, a result which further plunged the club into crisis.

"We want to place on record our thanks to Felix Magath", announced chairman Francisco Garcia-Sanz.

"He has, during two spells at Wolfsburg, showed tremendous commitment to our club and to the city of Wolfsburg and sport in the region."

Now the Wolves will try to steer the side to the relative safety of mid-table.

Wolfsburg have appointed Lorenz-Gunther Kostner as the club’s caretaker manager.

Wolfsburg are next in action on Saturday, when they travel to Fortuna Dusseldorf.
