Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas is keen on bringing in another Belgian defender, after adding Jan Vertonghen from Ajax in the summer.

According to sources in Belgium, the former Chelsea manager has made several trips to watch defender Toby Alderweireld, and is now seriously pondering a bid for the 23-year-old.

Like Vertonghen before him, Alderweireld turns out for Dutch champions Ajax and is believed to be available for the right price.

A team-mate of Vertonghen at international level with Belgium too, Alderweireld could be expected to quickly hit the ground running alongside a familiar face in the heart of the Spurs defence at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham however are not the only club actively tracking Alderweireld, who will only have one year left to run on his contract at the Amsterdam ArenA next summer.

Indeed, Alderweireld has also attracted attention from Italian giants AC Milan, who are still searching for a suitable replacement for Thiago Silva, who was sold to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

relatedNewsStoryIt remains to be seen whether Ajax will be prepared to cash in on Alderweireld in the winter transfer window, or hold out until the summer, but a bid of around the €7M mark would test the Dutch champions, especially if, as expected, they have dropped out of the Champions League.

Alderweireld is a key player for Frank de Boer’s men and has appeared in all ten of the club’s Eredivisie games so far this season, in addition to all three of the club’s Champions League group matches.

Alderweireld would undoubtedly be tempted by the chance to reprise his partnership with Vertonghen in London.

At international level he has won 20 caps for Marc Wilmots’ Red Devils.
